Congress candidate for Jhalrapatan Manvendra Singh is a “turncoat”, who has been “parachuted” into the constituency, and the people will send him back to where he belongs, Dushyant Singh, BJP MP for Jhalawar-Baran and son of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, said on Sunday.
Mr. Dushyant Singh is leading his mother’s campaign in Jhalrapatan against Mr. Manvendra Singh as she has been travelling across Rajasthan where the BJP is fighting to stay in power.
Mr. Dushyant Singh said Ms. Raje had brought about “phenomenal” development. “For her, the electorate is her family, and the family is campaigning for her, it is not Ms. Raje.”
In contrast, he said, Mr. Manvendra Singh, son of former BJP leader Jaswant Singh, came here from a place 700-800 km away. “He has been parachuted by the Congress president [Rahul Gandhi]. When the Congress president was here a few months ago, he had said that he would not field any ‘parachute’ candidate in Rajasthan. But he has put up a paratrooper here. So our family, the electorate, is ensuring that we send him back to where he belongs,” he said.
Mr. Manvendra Singh was fielded here just weeks after he walked over to the Congress from the BJP. He won from Sheo, an Assembly constituency in his family stronghold of Barmer, in 2013.
