Puducherry Assembly Elections 2016

Looking to the sun for sustenance

In the Kathirkamam constituency in Puducherry, a cashstrapped candidate has turned to nature to help sustain his election campaign. With a solar panel and a mike fitted to his motorbike, D. Ramesh, a candidate of the Naam Tamilar Katchi, wanted to create awareness of politics and environment. During the 2011 elections, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy stood here and won. The constituency was redrawn from the Thattanchavady constituency during the 2004 delimitation. Seizing the opportunity that the polls being held during peak summer provided, he installed a solar panel with help from his party leader.

Drawing on solar energy to recharge the battery powering the mike and speaker, he took to travelling around the constituency without having to bother about fuel expenses or emissions.
