The Election Commission on Thursday appointed Ashish Kundra as the new Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Mizoram from the panel of names provided by the State government.

Services of former CEO S.B. Shashank have been placed with the EC, said the electoral body.

The move is being seen as a truce to ensure smooth conduct of Assembly elections on November 28, following a demand by all the Coordination Committee of all NGOs of Mizoram to remove Mr. Shashank.

Last week, the Election Commission had asked the Mizoram government to send a panel of candidates for a new CEO.

The trouble started in the last week of October when Mr. Shashank wrote to the Commission alleging interference by the State government's Home Department in the poll preparations.

Subsequently, the then Principal Secretary (Home) Lalnunmawia Chuaungo, a Gujarat-cadre IAS officer of 1987 batch, was removed by the EC and Lalrinliana Fanai appointed.

This triggered protests by the State's civil society, which demanded Mr. Shashank's ouster. The permission to Bru voters put up in Tripura relief camps to vote also had a bearing on the demand for his removal.

The Commission then held meetings with the NGO representatives and also summoned the then CEO for a hearing.

Accepting the broad contours of a joint  resolution passed by the All NGO coordination committee, the Election Commission then set up a high-level team for further meetings, in the interest of holding peaceful polls.
