A day before the National People’s Party (NPP)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government takes oath in Meghalaya, the Congress on Monday recalled how Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah had called the Conrad Sangma-led government as the most corrupt government in the country.

Taking a dig at the ruling party’s ‘fit of amensia’, Congress communication chief Jairam Ramesh said that the BJP’s “washing machine is running in full speed”.

“A few days back Conrad Sangma’s government in Meghalaya was the MOST corrupt in the country according to both PM & HM. Now of course, BJP in a fit of amnesia I suppose, is joining hands with him. Meghalaya deserves better,” tweeted Mr. Ramesh.

“I should have added that BJP Washing Machine is now running full speed,” he said in another tweet.

Mr. Ramesh also shared two videos: one that showed the Prime Minister accusing the Sangma-led Meghalaya government of corruption at an election rally while the second one had Mr. Shah making the same charge at another rally.

Addressing a joint press conference with spokesperson Supriya Shrinate at the All India Congress Committee (AICC), Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief and Lok Sabha member Vincent Pala accused the BJP of “cheating” the people of his State.

“The honorable Prime Minister has come to Meghalaya, the honorable Home Minister, the President of the BJP... all of them abused and accused the NPP. But, after the results, when the BJP got only two out of 60 seats, then the next day they joined hands together,” Mr. Pala told reporters.

“The honorable Prime Minister is coming tomorrow and all other BJP leaders to just market that they are getting a government in Meghalaya. This is how they betray the people of the State and how they market to the rest of India,” added the Lok Sabha member.

Ms. Shrinate said the alliance with NPP revealed the “true character” of the BJP. “No less than the BJP president J.P. Nadda talked of setting up a probe into the corruption charges by a former Supreme Court judge. And then they join hands after results. If this is not hypocrisy then what is?” she said.
