Sharmila to contest against Ibobi Singh

February 05, 2017 01:29 am | Updated 01:29 am IST - IMPHAL:

Irom Sharmila, who had undertaken a fast for 16 years demanding repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), on Saturday started her election campaign at Moijing in the Thoubal constituency from where Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh was elected. She is planning to contest against Mr. Singh, apart from her home constituency, Khurai. She says she wants to become the Chief Minister to repeal the AFSPA. She is the convener of the newly formed People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance. Talking to the voters at Moijing, she said that if her party came to power, there would be a corruption-free government. She had ended her fast saying that there was a lukewarm response from people to her campaign.
