Maharashtra Elections 2019: Vikhe Patil leads in Ahmednagar, but Cong-NCP rule in district

Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil leads, but Nationalist Congress Party and Congress reign supreme in the district according to early trends

While the BJP's Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil is leading from the Shirdi Assembly segment, early trends indicate that the Congress'-NCP alliance is leading on eight of the 10 Assembly seats in the western Maharashtra district of Ahmednagar.

Apart from Mr. Vikhe-Patil and Babanrao Pachpute (on the Shrigonda Assembly segment), the Congress-NCP is leading on remaining seats in the district.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Balasaheb Thorat is leading from his stronghold in the Sangamner Assembly segment, while the NCP's Rohit Pawar is consolidating his lead over the BJP's Ram Shinde.

Both Mr. Vikhe-Patil and Mr. Pachpute, until recently, belonged to the Congress and the NCP before defecting to the BJP.

A long-standing rivalry between the Vikhe-Patil and the Pawar clans which climaxed in NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s alleged intransigence over refusing to leave the Ahmednagar Lok Sabha seat for Mr. Vikhe-Patil's son - Dr. Sujay Vikhe-Patil - had led to Mr. Vikhe-Patil's estrangement with the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Since Dr. Sujay Vikhe-Patil's win in the Ahmednagar Lok Sabha constituency by a handsome margin, the senior Vikhe-Patil along with his son has thrown his full weight behind the BJP's campaign to ensure that all 10 seats in the district are won by the saffron alliance.

However, it appears that the Congress and the NCP could just spring a surprise.
