Maharashtra Elections 2019: Nitesh Rane inches to victory in Kankavli

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Nitesh Rane, son of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Narayan Rane, is inching to victory in the Kankavli Assembly segment in Sindhudurg. The seat is a traditional bastion of the Rane clan.

The BJP's move to field Mr Rane, who was already a sitting MLA from Kankavli, had severely irked its ally, the Shiv Sena, which in turn propped up its own nominee, local Sena leader Satish Sawant. Mr. Rane has taken a lead of more than 16,000 votes over Mr. Sawant.

Nitesh Rane had won the Kankavli seat in 2014 Assembly elections on a Congress ticket. His father, Narayan Rane, had exited the Congress in 2017. Both father and son had only recently made their official entries into the BJP. Mr. Rane, a former Shiv Sainik, has alleged the Sena of deliberately delaying his entry into the BJP because of the past acrimony between himself and the Sena.
