Lok Sabha Election 2019

Urmila’s rally disrupted by Modi chants again

Cong. candidate says people are free to express themselves

Actor-turned-politician Urmila Matondkar’s campaign rally was disrupted by a group of men shouting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name for the second day in a row.

Ms. Matondkar, who is the Congress candidate for Mumbai North, was scheduled to begin her campaign from Malad (East) and go up to Kandivali (East) on Tuesday. A video of the incident, which was later widely circulated on social media, shows some men loudly chanting Mr. Modi’s name as soon as Ms. Matondkar’s rally entered the populated Diamond Market area in Malad.

‘I remained calm’

Saying that she did not know who those shouting slogans on Tuesday were, Ms. Matondkar told The Hindu, “I believe in freedom of expression, which this government has tried to sabotage in the last four-and-a-half years. If somebody wants to create havoc in my rally, they can do it. I remained calm today. I don’t know who they were, but I don’t think people will want to chant Modi slogans at Diamond Market, which crashed overnight after the demonetisation ‘demon’ hit all of us.”

In a similar incident on Monday, Ms. Matondkar had approached the police after a group of men allegedly tried to disrupt her rally near Borivali railway station.

The Congress candidate was provided police protection, and also sought action against the men who she alleged were chanting Mr. Modi’s name as soon as her campaign rally entered the station premises.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) termed Tuesday’s incident as a “crystal-clear display of the presence of Modi wave in the country.”

Atul Bhatkhalkar, BJP MLA from Kandivali (East), told The Hindu, “The fact that the common people from the area were shouting Mr. Modi’s name shows how the Modi wave is still alive. When the same happened on Monday, Congress workers beat up the people and blamed it on our party. They are unable to accept that people still support the BJP.”
