The Election Commission has given Congress president Rahul Gandhi time till May 10 to respond to its notice on his speech at Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh on April 23.

Mr. Gandhi had sought another extension, after the Election Commission asked him to submit his reply by May 7. It had sent the notice on May 1 with a deadline of 48 hours.

The notice was issued on the allegation by the BJP that in his speech, Mr. Gandhi said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had brought in a law under which tribal people could be shot at. “They snatch away your land, jungle and water… and then say the tribal people can be shot at,” Mr. Gandhi said, according to the complaint.
