This former IAS officer ‘walks the talk’

R. Rangarajan during a campaign in Kottivakkam.

In a quiet neighbourhood park in Kottivakkam, evening walkers and parents accompanying their children in the play area were greeted by ex-IAS officer R.Rangarajan, walking along the streets, with a posse of supporters.

An auto led the way for the group through the narrow streets filled with houses, announcing the party name and symbol to the strains of the famous MGR song proclaiming “Naalai Namadhey“ (tomorrow is ours).

For many residents in the area, there was definite excitement, as it was the first candidate that they were seeing in the area, canvassing for votes. And, when they learnt that their candidate was a former IAS officer, their curiosity went up. “We had heard Kamal Haasan is fielding educated people from his party and this is the first candidate we are meeting,” said S.Jeeva, peering out from behind his counter at the provision store in Kottivakkam.

Egged on by cadre

Another motorist there was visibly delighted to see the MNM team. He stopped and showed the party workers the wallpaper on his smart phone – a photo of the star.

The party workers hastened to capitalise on the situation: “Hey, you should come and help us out! It is our duty to make sure our Thalaivar wins, isn’t it!” they told him, while handing him pamphlets to be distributed to his friends.

Accompanied by a small but enthusiastic group of party workers, some distri buting pamphlets and a few of them holding placards with the party’s name and symbol, Mr. Rangarajan canvassed for votes on foot, stopping to speak to residents, shopkeepers and even a few motorists who stopped our of curiousity when they saw the group.
