The Election Commission on Tuesday deferred polling in the Tripura East parliamentary constituency from April 18 to 23 due to the “law and order situation.”

The poll panel took the decision following reports from the Special Police Observers that the circumstances were not conducive for holding free and fair elections in the constituency.

The Returning Officer had also asked for extra central forces.

Tripura Chief Electoral Officer Sriram Taranikanti on Tuesday night gave two reasons for deferment of elections in east constituency. First requirement to augment security deployment and patrolling, and second to carry out confidence building measures in five days till the new date of polling in the constituency.

Opposition Congress and CPI(M), both were lodging complaints with the commission at regular intervals, hailed the postponement of election for five days in east Tripura constituency.
