A boon and boom time for pundits: RJD’s Shivanand Tiwari

At a time when the Lok Sabha election is barely three weeks away and names of candidates are to be announced shortly, many of the prospective candidates in Bihar are queuing up before pundits and astrologers to better their chances of win in the upcoming polls.

Some of them are also engaged in special pujas in the State, while some others outside it.

“When the election approaches, politicians not only from Bihar but also from other States start approaching people like us either to know about their poll prospect or to perform some special pujas to better it”, a Noida-based pundit and astrologer Swami Sarvabhoot Sharanam told The Hindu over phone.

“Everyday I get phone calls from politicians in Bihar and even Ahmedabad to know about their electoral fortune, but I perform pujas only for those who actually believe in these divine things”, he added.

Swami Sharanam is from Bihar and lives in Noida (U.P.) near Delhi for a long time. In July 2016 famous Pakistan cricket player Danish Kaneria had visited him for a special puja to get over his life-time ban, which catapulted Swami Sharanam into the limelight.

Similarly, Patna-based astrologer Ajit Kumar said several politicians or their aides have approached him to know their poll-prospect. “I scan solar and lunar phases of their kundali (birth-chart) and do my calculation of planetary movements…some get positive feedback, some negative as well…I rely on my reading of their kundali”, he said. He, however, refused to reveal names of politicians who sought his services. “Revealing their name will be breach of trust”, he said.

Popular spots

Several politicians from the State have engaged pundits at places like Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, Vindhyanchal in Uttar Pradesh and Kamakhya in Assam for special pujas to better their prospects, said Swami Sharanam.

Former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad too have been performing such pujas at these places, he said.

In July 2013 his visit to Pagla Baba ashram in Mirzapur of Uttar Pradesh had hit headlines in newspapers. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s video meeting with a Siwan based tantric too had gone viral before the2015 State Assembly poll.

Pundit Diwakar Jha said most popular puja for these politicians are navagraha paath and Bagalamukhi ritual for desired results. “Sitting MPs want to know whether they will be repeated or not and if repeated what will be their chances…while, some of them also want us to perform pujas to mar prospect of their rivals”, he told The Hindu.

Some other politicians though prefer to visit Sai Baba temple in Nasik of Maharashtra and then to the temple of Shani Shingapur for the desired result in elections. “Though it is difficult to say how many of them could win the poll because of all this but it’s definitely a boon and boom time for pundits, astrologers and fortune-tellers”, senior RJD leader Shivanand Tiwari told The Hindu.
