PM hits out at Naveen Patnaik government on the violence ahead of polls, says the state seems to be going West Bengal way

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday came down heavily on the Naveen Patnaik government of Odisha, saying the violence perpetrated in the last 10 to 12 days by it showed that it was going the West Bengal way.

At a public meeting at Kendrapara, 70 km from Bhubaneswar, Mr. Modi said, “In the first two phases of election, I refrained myself from criticising Naveen Babu. I want an honourable farewell for him as he has served Odisha for such a long period. He should not leave being insulted. So I maintained silence. But with violence unleashed in the past 10 to 12 days, like in West Bengal, and some officers turning a blind to such acts, I want to tell Naveen Babu that the handful of officers cannot save him. His departure is imminent. People of Odisha were in a mood to bid adieu to you [Mr. Patnaik] with folded hands. But now they want to see you off in anger. You cannot escape. People have assessed the situation well. They have made up their mind to install a double engine [BJP governments] in New Delhi and Bhubaneswar.”

Youths casting votes for the first time wanted an Odisha that fitted into their aspiration and a 21 century Odisha. They were asking questions as to why had it so happened that so much poverty was prevailing in India’s richest State, he said.

Youths born around the time the BJD came to power were seeking an answer now. A generation had grown up, but migration had not stopped. No new industry had come up, irrigation had not been extended and cold storages not set up for conservation of farm produces, he alleged.

“Problems are many, but development is not a priority for the government here. Power is the only priority. Elections have taken place year after year and people have backed the government. Those who are in power have taken people for granted,” he stated.

Reiterating the need for change in the State, he said people need not have to vote out a government for the sake of change. They should look for a better alternative and vote for the BJP.
