West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of indulging in horse-trading and said his candidature should be cancelled.

Responding to Mr. Modi’s remarks at Sreerampur on Monday that 40 MLAs of her party were in touch with him, Ms. Banerjee said the comments reflected “horse-trading”.

“A Prime Minister is indulging in horse-trading. This is so shameful. For this one reason his candidature needs to be cancelled,” she said at meetings in Hooghly and Howrah districts.

She said the comments should be looked in the context of the anti-defection law. “Occupying a constitutional post, you speak against the Constitution. You have no right to remain as the Prime Minister.” However hard the BJP leaders might try, the party would never come to power in West Bengal, she said.
