After its candidates made an impression in urban and semi-urban Parliamentary constituencies in the recent general elections, the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) leadership has asked its candidates and party workers to start door-to-door campaign as part of preparation for the Assembly elections in 2021.
MNM vice-president Mahendran, who polled 1.44 lakh votes in Coimbatore Parliamentary constituency, told The Hindu , “We have asked the candidates and party workers to get back to each constituency and thank the voters. We will also start door-to-door campaigns immediately.” While the party seemed to have fallen short of the high expectations it had set for the Lok Sabha polls, Dr. Mahendran said the support for MNM goes well beyond the 3.72% of the total votes that it has managed to poll. “Our assessment of the election results is that this was an anti-Modi vote and not a pro-DMK vote,” he said. “The sentiment of many voters was that this was an election to pick the PM and they would vote for us for the State Assembly elections,” said Dr. Mahendran. “Which is why you see parties such as the Congress, the CPI(M) and CPI winning seats from Tamil Nadu. The results are encouraging for us,” he added.
