Lok Sabha Election 2019

It’s Bharatiya Jinnah Party, says Congress

BJP candidate Guman Singh Damor’s praise for Pakistan founder draws flak

After a Lok Sabha candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reportedly praised Mohammad Ali Jinnah at a public meeting, the Congress on Monday said the BJP should be called ‘Bharatiya Jinnah Party.’

The Congress offensive is timed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public rally campaign in Ratlam where he campaigned for Guman Singh Damor, the BJP candidate from Ratlam-Jhabua Lok Sabha constituency.

“Now Modi ji is campaigning for his Jinnah-supporting candidate. Now it is becoming clear why Modi ji invited Nawaz Sharif for his swearing-in, why he went to Pakistan uninvited and why Imran Khan wants them to come to power. This is the Bharatiya Jinnah Party,” Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said at a press conference.

Last Saturday, at a public rally in Ranapur (Madhya Pradesh) Mr. Damor made a statement that India’s partition could have been avoided if Mr. Jinnah [the founder of Pakistan] had been allowed to be the first Prime Minister instead of Jawaharlal Nehru.

“Jinnah (the founder of Pakistan) was an advocate and a learned man. If a decision had been taken to make Jinnah PM at the time, then India would not have been partitioned,” the BJP candidate claimed.

Reacting to the comment, Mr. Khera said, “Those who created a furore over Jinnah’s portrait in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) are now campaigning for a person who praised Jinnah. Damor with his remarks has exposed the thinking of the BJP and the RSS.”

“Damor hoped that Jinnah would have been the first PM. There can be two things. Either these people have become so blinded by their hatred of Nehru that they end up loving Jinnah, or they have become so blinded by their love for Jinnah that they end up hating Nehru,” Mr. Khera said.
