The VCK, an ally of the DMK, has adopted a unique formula for contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Double symbol
While its leader Thol. Thirumavalavan will contest the Chidambaram (SC) seat on an independent poll symbol, the party’s general secretary, Ravikumar, will contest from Villupuram (SC) on the DMK’s ‘Rising Sun’ symbol. The DMK had requested the VCK to contest on its poll symbol, and Mr. Thirumavalavan on Sunday came up with the hitherto unheard of formula, where candidates of the same party would contest an election on different symbols.
Mr. Ravikumar told The Hindu that by contesting on the ‘Rising Sun’ symbol, his prospects of victory would be enhanced in the constituency, where he is pitted against the PMK.
“[In the past,] we lost the election by a small margin in the constituency. A familiar symbol will always be helpful as I am a new face to the constituency,” he said.
Mr. Ravikumar explained that unlike him, Mr. Thirumavalavan won’t face any difficulties even if he contested on an independent symbol, as he had contested in the Chidambaram constituency five times in the past and was elected to the seat only once.
