Amidst tight security, polling material, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and control units, were despatched in GPS-fitted vehicles from the taluk office here to the respective polling stations in Cuddalore Lok Sabha constituency on Wednesday.
According to sources, 4,600 ballot units, 2,300 control units and Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPATs) machines were sent to all the polling centres.
The polling material were stored Assembly segment-wise in the strong room and opened in the presence of Cuddalore sub-collector Sarayu.
As many as 195 zonal teams were engaged in transporting the polling material to all the polling booths.
Zonal teams
Each zonal team is in charge of 10 polling booths and officials at the control room monitored the ‘end-to-end’ movement of the ballot units and VVPAT machines. Of the 2,300 polling stations in the district, 163 had been identified as vulnerable while four had been identified as critical.
The district administration has linked the web cameras installed in sensitive and vulnerable polling booths to the control room functioning at the Collectorate to monitor live feed of the polling process.
Collector V. Anbuselvan said 56 cases had been registered against political parties for violation of the model code of conduct.
Twenty nine cases were registered against the AIADMK and its allies while 20 were registered against the DMK and its alliance partners.
Seven cases were registered against the AMMK. Six persons belonging to various political parties were detained and cases booked against them for alleged distribution of money to voters ahead of elections, he said.
Chidambaram
Arrangements were put in place by the election machinery in Chidambaram which has 14,59,735 voters — 7,28,368 men, 7,31,315 women and 52 third gender.
In Villupuram, 8,119 ballot units, 4,383 control units and 4,378 VVPAT machines required for the Villupuram and Kallakurichi Lok Sabha constituencies in the district were despatched to the respective polling stations amid tight security on Tuesday.
252 critical booths
As many as 252 of the 3,234 polling stations in Villupuram district have been identified as critical and vulnerable, according to District Election Officer and Collector L. Subramanian.
As per the final electoral roll, the total number of voters in Villupuram district is 26,65,928 — 13,36,175 men, 13,29,373 women and 380 persons belonging to the third gender.
