The Election Commission has appointed former Deputy Election Commissioner Vinod Zutshi, a retired IAS officer, as a special observer for East Tripura polls. The Commission had earlier made Mr. Zutshi a special observer, along with retired IAS officer Noor Mohammad and retired IPS officer A.S. Gill, for assessing the ground situation in Jammu and Kashmir and determine the feasibility for holding State Assembly elections there. The team has submitted its report to the ECAbout a week ago, the poll panel had deferred the election to the East Tripura seat from April 18 to April 23 Tuesday due to the law and order situation, as highlighted by the State Chief Electoral Officer, the Special police officer and the returning officer of the constituency. After the first phase in West Tripura on April 11, the CPI(M) and the Congress had demanded re-polls at 460 polling stations, alleging massive rigging by the ruling party, BJP, which refuted the charges.
