Congress names 56 candidates in fifth list

No end to Bengal imbroglio

The Congress late on Monday night announced the names of 56 candidates including those from West Bengal where the CPI(M) had already announced their sitting Lok Sabha members.

The party also announced the list of candidates for the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha for Assembly elections.

Signalling that the Congress would go it alone in Bengal, the party named former Union Minister Deepa Dasmunsi from the Raiganj seat where Mohammad Salim of the CPI(M) is the MP. Abu Hena has been named from Murshidabad, where B. Khan of the CPI(M) is the MP.

The prominent names from Bengal include Adhir Choudhury, Abu Hashem Khan Choudhury and Abhijeet Mukherjee, son of the former President Pranab Mukherjee. In Andhra Pradesh, the 22 candidates announced include former Union Minister Pallam Raju from the Kakinada seat.

Five names from Assam have been announced, including Rajya Sabha member Bhubaneshwar Kalita.

Three candidates from Uttar Pradesh, including a change of candidate in Meerut, has been announced, while former MP Hamdullah Saeed has been named for Lakshwadeep.
