Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati said the party is looking for a role in the “balance of power” at the Centre after the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing a rally here on Wednesday, she said there was a strong wave of support in favour of the BSP-Samajwadi Party-Rashtriya Lok Dal alliance in Uttar Pradesh, which sends 80 members to the Lok Sabha.

She predicted that the BJP will be “swept away” in the elections, while her party will be playing a role in the “balance of power” at the Centre. She appealed to the people of Karnataka to help BSP open its account in the State in the coming polls by sending its representative to the Lok Sabha. All 28 BSP candidates attended the party’s first election rally in the State.

Referring to the election of BSP’s N. Mahesh from Kollegal Reserved constituency during last year’s Assembly elections and his short stint as Minister in the H.D. Kumaraswamy-led government, Ms. Mayawati appealed to the people to help BSP perform better in the future elections to the State Assembly and give BSP not only the lever for “balance of power”, but also a shot at the post of Chief Minister.

She cautioned people against being misled by the media, opinion polls and manifestos of different parties.

Dismissing the promises listed in the manifestos of both the BJP and the Congress, the BSP chief said her party never believed in releasing pre-poll manifestos. For, after the polls, they are conveniently thrown away by the respectively parties, she said while questioning when BJP’s promise of “achche din” would come.

Rubbishing even the Congress’s promise of providing each poor family a monthly assistance of ₹6,000, Ms. Mayawati said both the BJP and Congress have no moral right to make pre-poll promises as they have failed to implement them.

The BSP, she said, believes in execution of work to uplift the poor.

If given a chance to hold the reins of power, the BSP will provide permanent employment to the poor in government and private sectors, she added.
