The former Prime Minster H.D. Deve Gowda has said yet again that this would be the last election of his political career. He is contesting from Tumakuru Lok Sabha constituency.
He told reporters here on Saturday though he had no desire to contest this time too because of his age factor, he decided to go ahead following pressure from Janata Dal (Secular) supporters.
“I have been in electoral politics for long, I will not contest an election after this one,” he said. Mr. Gowda had announced three years ago that he would not contest elections again.
‘Rahul is our choice’
Mr. Gowda said though national leaders such as Mayawati, Mamata Banerjee, Sharad Pawar, and N. Chandrababu Naidu were all eligible to become the Prime Minister, his party would support Congress president Rahul Gandhi for the post.
He declared that he had no desire to become the Prime Minister again. He lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for assuming he was “supreme” in the country. “I successfully ran a 20-party coalition government at the Centre while A.B. Vajpayee too ran a good government with the support of 13 parties. We knew how to take people along and give a pro-people government,” he said.
