The Income Tax (IT) department’s Investigations Wing has summoned R.B Udhayakumar, Tamil Nadu Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management, in connection with a search conducted of his room at the MLAs’ hostel in Chennai on Sunday night.

A senior official from the Investigations Wing said, “We have issued summons to the minister for recording his statement.” The I-T department has asked the Minister to appear before it by Wednesday.

The official said that they had found several slips from the room and were scrutinising them. When asked whether the slips had any details regarding cash distribution for the Lok Sabha elections, the official said, “I cannot say anything now. Investigations are on.”

“Last night (Sunday), the Commissioner of Police, Chennai city, sent some information to our team that there was some cash in the room of Mr. Udhayakumar at the MLAs’ hostel. Our team immediately rushed to the spot along with the flying squad and thoroughly checked the room,” he said. The officials found several empty bags with some slips. “One policeman in the security detail of the minister was there. The slips were impounded and the policeman’s statement was recorded, which was not of much help,” the I-T official added.
