Thodupuzha: Danger zones for KC(M)

March 23, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:31 am IST

Thodupuzha is the only low range constituency in the district which is considered a crucial battlefield for the Kerala Congress (M) [KC(M)] where P.J. Joseph represented seven terms both with the LDF and with the UDF.

It comprises the municipality of Thodupuzha and the grama panchayats of Alakkode, Edavetty, Karimannur, Karnkunnam, Kumaramangalam, Udumpannur, Vannappuram (all ruled by LDF), Muttam (rebel with the support of UDF), Purappuzha (Kerala Congress all alone), Velliyamattom, Manakkadu, and Kodikulam (won by the UDF). Though Mr. Joseph won seven times here, he was in 2001 (while with the LDF) defeated by P.T. Thomas of the Congress. Since the constituency was formed in 1957, the first three terms were represented by C.M. Mathew when he was in the Congress and once when he was in the Kerala Congress. Thomas had also defeated P.C. Joseph of the Kerala Congress in 1991.

Though the Christian population has a majority, a few seats were won by the BJP in the local bodies election. The constituency is keenly watched in the wake of the formation of the Janadhipathya Kerala Congress (JKC) led by Francis George and influence enjoyed by the High-range Protection Council (HPC), an umbrella organisation of the Church, which is in alliance with the LDF. There is an increase of 17,123 new voters in the constituency of the 1,94,652 total voters. The number of women voters is 98,487 and male 96,165.
