President of the All India Mahila Congress Sushmita Dev has alleged that the safety of women was least important to the BJP government and women were not safe under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rule.
Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Ms. Dev said that in BJP-ruled States rapes had become the order of the day and consequently women were feeling insecure.
She said that Mr. Modi criticised the candlelight march by AICC president Rahul Gandhi alleging that the Congress was communalising a rape issue.
“Religion or region of the victim is not important. What is important is justice for the victims through punishment for the perpetrators of the crime,” she said.
Ms. Dev said that she agreed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement that rapes should not be politicised. However Mr. Modi himself politicised the Nirbhaya issue and blamed the UPA government for the crime, she said.
Pointing out that crimes against women had increased to 63.79% and attempt to rape cases had gone up to 35.31%, She said even a single rape against a woman was shameful act for the nation. Failure to take stringent action against the perpetrators of the crime by the Modi government was sending out a wrong signal to the country that it was alright even if a rape happened, which was a matter of concern, she said.
She also expressed shock over the statement of Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir that the rape in Kathua was a trivial issue. “There was no action against a BJP MLA who was accused in the Unnao case. It is time to change BJP’s popular slogan Beti Bacho, Beti Padao into BJP Se Beti Bachao !,” she said.
