Congress list springs a few surprises in Shivamogga

The list of Congress candidates for all seven Assembly segments in the district has sprung a few surprises, with tickets offered to three new faces — S.K. Srinivas from Shivamogga Rural, Raju Tallur from Sorab, and G.B. Malathesh from Shikaripur.

As expected, all three sitting MLAs — Kagodu Thimmappa from Sagar segment, Kimmane Rathnakar from Tirthahalli, and K.B. Prasanna Kumar from Shivamogga — have been fielded again. In Sagar segment, there was speculation that the party would not field Mr. Thimmappa considering his age. It was thought that the Congress may go with Mr. Thimmappa’s daughter Raja Nandini or B.R. Jayanth, former member of the Karnataka State Planning Board.

From Bhadravathi, the party will field B.K. Sangameshwar, who won from there in 2004 and 2008. In the 2013 election, the party had fielded former Union Minister C.M. Ibrahim. Disappointed with the denial of ticket, Mr. Sangameshwar had contested as an Independent and lost. Following that election, he was re-inducted into the party.

The choice of Mr. Srinivas, son of former MLA Kariyanna, as candidate from Shivamogga Rural is likely to trigger discontent in the party. Pallavi, president of the women’s wing of the District Congress Committee, and retired bureaucrat Baladevakrishna were aspirants for the ticket, and their supporters are said to be upset with Mr. Srinivas’ candidature.

As for Mr. Tallur, he joined the party only recently. Entrepreneur H. Sridhar was a strong aspirant for ticket from Sorab. The Congress leadership had also tried to lure former Minister H. Halappa, who was upset with the BJP leadership, into its fold and field him from this constituency.

In Shikaripur segment, there was a search for a suitable candidate to take on BJP State president B.S. Yeddyurappa. The Congress leadership had initially decided to field R. Prasanna Kumar, MLC, from there. Mr. Kumar had even toured the constituency prior to the declaration of the elections. Ultimately, the party went with Mr. Malathesh, a member of the Shikaripur TMC.

The Congress’s decision to field Mr. Srinivas has triggered widespread discontent.

Following the announcement of Mr. Srinivas’ candidature, the followers of N. Ravikumar, secretary of the Shivamogga District Congress Committee who was among the aspirants for the ticket, staged a protest on the premises of the SDCC office on Monday. The protesters said Mr. Srinivas was not involved in the activities of the party in Shivamogga Rural and was unaware of the problems faced by locals. They said the party would lose if it went ahead with Mr. Srinivas as candidate. The protesters demanded that the Congress party leadership reconsider the decision and offer ticket for Mr. Ravikumar.

On Tuesday, large number of followers of Mr. Baladevakrishna from Holehonnur and Anaveri gram panchayat limits staged a protest outside the SDCC office. Speaking to the protesters, T.N. Srinivas, president of SDCC, said the discontent would be brought to the notice of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.

Meanwhile, Shivamogga Taluk Korama Samaja Sangha, an association of Korama community members, has expressed dissatisfaction over the denial of ticket to Ms. Pallavi.
