Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party for constantly “attacking” the Constitution.

The Congress leader said the BJP, which has been in power for a decade in Haryana, had turned the State into a centre of unemployment, and this was the reason crime had increased rapidly in the State. He was addressing an election rally in Sonipat’s Gohana as a part of Vijay Sankalp yatra.

Mr. Gandhi alleged that the BJP was constantly trying to end the reservation of Dalits and Backward Classes by attacking the Constitution. “The Congress party will protect it with full force,” he said.

He said the wave in favour of the Congress in Haryana is turning into a storm. “The fight in the election is between the BJP and Congress. People will reject the BJP’s B- and C-teams, and Independents. The BJP and RSS do not have the strength to stand in front of the Congress party,” he said.

“The BJP government has turned Haryana into a centre of unemployment. This is the reason crime has increased rapidly. The [Congress-led] UPA government approved the Gohana Rail Coach Factory which was snatched away by the BJP government, and with this lakhs of jobs were lost. The people of Haryana will not forget this,” he said.

Mr. Gandhi said the BJP government had shut small and medium industries, and now has also closed avenues to join the Army by bringing in the Agnipath Scheme. “The scheme was introduced so that pension need not be paid to soldiers, and their families need not be provided canteen facilities. Under the guise of the Agnipath Yojana, the BJP government is handing over the country’s defence budget to companies of industrialists close to it,” he added.
