The Left parties – which had this time round openly extended support to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi – welcomed the Assembly election verdict and saluted the people of the city for “decisively rejecting” the BJP.
In a statement, the Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said the AAP, under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal, had won an “unprecedented and resounding mandate” in the election.
Congratulating the people for rejecting the BJP, the CPI(M) said: “The massive mandate should enable the new government to adopt and implement policies in favour of the aam aadmi. ”
The CPI, in its statement, said the voters had given a massive mandate against the BJP’s “arrogance and double speak.”
While both parties had privately asked its rank and file to vote for the AAP in the 2013 Assembly poll and last year’s Lok Sabha election, CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat last week openly announced support for the fledgling party in the 55 seats where the Left was not in the fray. The CPI’s Delhi unit also issued a similar statement.
