A former tennis player, Bedi became the first-ever woman IPS officer in 1972. Winner of the 1979 President’s Police Medal and 1994 Magsaysay Award, she served as United Nations civilian police adviser (2003-07) before going on to figure prominently alongside Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal as a member of India Against Corruption in 2011-12. In Jan. 2015, she joined BJP amid controversy and went on to be projected as the party’s chief ministerial candidate.
