Bhartiya Janata Party candidate from New Delhi constituency Nupur Sharma alleged that she was manhandled by an Aam Aadmi Party volunteer at Princess Park near India Gate on Saturday.
Accusing the AAP of being an anti-woman party, she further alleged that an AAP volunteer also tried to manhandle her female colleagues present with her.
Ms. Sharma has been fielded against AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and senior Congress leader Kiran Walia from the New Delhi seat.
“An AAP worker wearing a muffler and sweatshirt was asking people to vote for the AAP. We asked the police to intervene. By the time they took action, he had taken off the sweatshirt and a woman colleague of his hid it in her sweater. When we confronted them, he pushed and manhandled my sisters,” she alleged.
She added that Mr. Kejriwal had failed to walk the talk about women’s safety and his volunteer’s behaviour was a testimony to the “doublespeak”. “Is how they behave with women? They have no right to talk about women’s security.”
The former student union leader also dragged Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had tweeted in support of the AAP earlier this week, into the controversy.
“This is the kind of politics Mamata Banerjee has been pursuing in West Bengal and now the AAP is doing the same here,” Ms. Sharma said.
