Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday said the results of Delhi assembly elections were a loud and clear message to all political parties that the “people are supreme” but ruled out the possibility of it having any effect on its alliance with BJP for government formation in Jammu and Kashmir.

“This is a loud and clear message to all political parties that people are supreme. They have shown it time and again, and they have had their reasons for it,” PDP chief spokesman Naeem Akhtar told PTI .

Asked if the results of Delhi elections would have any effect on its alliance with BJP for government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, Mr. Akhtar said the two issues were not connected. AAP is heading for a near-sweep in Delhi elections, decimating BJP and Congress. It is set to secure 66 of the 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly.

“Our talks (with BJP) on government formation are for the betterment and development of Jammu and Kashmir. Delhi elections and the government formation here are not connected,” he said. The PDP spokesman said structured talks with BJP for government formation have not started yet. “We have given our outline for development of Jammu and Kashmir... The talks are ongoing and we are hopeful of arriving at a consensus on a common minimum programme.” PDP and BJP had a seat-sharing arrangement for the elections to four seats of Rajya Sabha in Jammu and Kashmir.

The regional party won two seats, the ruling party at the Centre and the opposition Congress got one seat each. The understanding for the Rajya Sabha polls between the two parties had indicated that PDP and BJP, the single largest and second largest party respectively in the state assembly, would speed up the process of government formation in the state.

The state is under Governor’s Rule since January 8 after the December 23 results of the state elections threw up a hung assembly.

Omar congratulates AAP

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday congratulated AAP for its performance in Delhi Assembly polls, saying there was a lesson for Congress that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP were not unbeatable.

“Wow, well done #Delhi & well done @AamAadmiParty. Good luck to @ArvindKejriwal for the next 5 years,” the National Conference working president tweeted. “If there is lesson for the #Congress in this it is that Modi & BJP aren’t unbeatable if you take the fight to them, don’t wait for mistakes,” he added.

On the political deadlock in Jammu and Kashmir, the former Chief Minister said the BJP and the PDP should now form the government in the state. “Finally dear @BJP4India & @jkpdp can we PLEASE get a Govt in J&K now? You said wait for Delhi & we waited. Now we don’t want to wait longer,” he said.
