Even as its Delhi unit cornered the Bharatiya Janata Party’s vision document over a controversial reference to Northeast residents living in Delhi, the senior Congress leadership raised questions about Kiran Bedi’s “suitability for the job” of Chief Minister.
Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma questioned the reason behind Ms. Bedi’s removal from successive postings while serving as an IPS officer, rekindled the controversy over her daughter’s admission to a medical college under tribal quota and challenged her to reveal the source of funds received by an NGO she heads.
“Is she ready to clarify the reason behind her transfers from Mizoram, Goa and Chandigarh, when she was in service, or how she managed to get her daughter enrolled in a medical college during one of her postings under the tribal quota?”
He added that the party will “give details” about both issues if “the BJP did not respond” by Wednesday.
Mr. Sharma also asked why an FIR against Ms. Bedi, registered as per directions from the Delhi High Court in November in relation to the alleged misuse of Office as Inspector General of Delhi (Prisons), was closed soon after the BJP came to power at the Centre?
Ms. Bedi, according to Mr. Sharma, was also “getting funds from abroad” for Navjyoti India Foundation, an NGO associated with her, and challenged her to reveal the source of these. He also charged her with buying discounted air tickets, but taking full fare from hosts of various events she attended across the country.
He also alleged that the BJP was spending as much as Rs.1,500 crore “to gain power in Delhi”.
