A businessman by profession, Maken has been a Delhi MLA for three consecutive terms (1994-2003). He was DU student union president in 1985. He has held various Central and State portfolios including Sports, Housing & Poverty Alleviation, Power, Transport & Tourism and brought in several reforms. In 2003, aged 39, he became the youngest State Assembly Speaker. Recently, he caused a stir after he tweeted criticising the appointment of BJP’s Smriti Irani as HRD Minister.
