Chhattisgarh elections 2018: EC transfers IAS officer Rajesh Toppo

The Election Commission on Saturday ordered the removal of Secretary and Commissioner of Public Relations of the Chhattisgarh government Rajesh Toppo after he was caught on tape asking a journalist to film Congress members abusing the party’s State president Bhupesh Baghel. He is also heard allegedly offering to pay for the operation.

On Thursday, Mr. Baghel shared the alleged conversation on his Twitter handle — the video was earlier broadcast by a local news channel.

Misuse of public funds

Seeking the immediate suspension of the 2005-batch IAS officer, Mr. Baghel alleged that public money was being used to target the Congress.

Special Secretary P. Anbalagan, a 2004-batch IAS officer, will replace Mr. Toppo, who has been transferred to the State Secretariat as Special Secretary.

The Congress also lodged a complaint with the Election Commission and submitted a copy of the video and transcripts, seeking Mr. Toppo’s removal.

The second phase of election in the State is scheduled on November 20.
