A First Information Report (FIR) was filed against BJP president Amit Shah on Tuesday in Begusarai for indirectly referring to Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad as “chara chor” (fodder thief) during the party’s poll campaign in Bihar.

An FIR was registered against Mr. Prasad too for calling Mr. Shah a narbhakshi (man-eater).

Addressing a party workers’ meet in Begusarai on September 30, Mr. Shah had said: “Bihar, which has a glorious past, today is known as the State of a chara chor …you cannot earn in this State, nor can your children study well and only the BJP can change the image of Bihar by developing it.” Mr. Shah was referring to Mr. Prasad’s conviction and imprisonment in the multi-crore fodder scam case.

Taking cognisance of Mr. Shah’s statement, the Block Development Officer (Surveillance) of the Matihani Assembly constituency Bhagirath Prasad filed a complaint with the Singhaul police station in Begusarai district. An FIR has been lodged under Sections 188, 171G of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 125 of the People’s Representation Act.

The State BJP leaders refused to comment. The FIR against the RJD chief was registered at the Secretariat police station under Sections 177(C) 2(B), 177(F) and 188 of the IPC, Patna Superintendent of Police Vikas Vaibhav told the media.
