Bihar Assembly Elections 2015

Owaisi draws youth in Seemanchal

In the Muslim-dominated Kishanganj district of Seemanchal, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has made waves with his blistering speeches.

Mr. Owaisi has hogged the limelight in Kishanganj-Purnea-Araria districts of Seemanchal, especially among young voters. But people The Hindu spoke to said they needed time to study his pitch before backing his candidates.

The AIMIM has put up six candidates across the Seemanchal area. The party is contesting in Kishanganj, Kochadhaman (Kishanganj district), Baisi and Amour (Purnea) and one Raniganj (reserved) of Araria. Five of the six candidates are Muslim. In the reserved Raniganj seat, it has fielded a Dalit, Amit Paswan.

In Kishanganj town, just 21 km from the Bangladesh border, Mr. Owaisi has made a posh hotel his base camp.

About 10 km away at Gachhpada in Kochadhaman constituency, Mr. Owaisi and his party candidate and Bihar unit president Akhtarul Iman were scheduled to address a poll meeting in the evening.

Mr. Iman turned up a little after but Mr. Owaisi skipped the meeting citing some “emergency”. Will they vote for Mr. Owaisi’s candidates? “This time we will only watch him…he needs time to prove his sincerity,” said Samved Haji.
