While the world goes gaga about owning the latest phone in the market, how about making one? Come January 7, IIT Hyderabad plays host to students from colleges across the country for a workshop where they build mobiles from scratch.

The mobile they design will have basic functionalities like call dialling, call receiving, sending and receiving SMSes using the GSM technology.

The workshop, hosted as part of the NVision Fest that enters its fifth edition this year, welcomes students numbering nearly 2000 across the country.

Besides providing insights into the practical know-how that goes into making a phone, the two-day workshop will help students gain conceptual knowledge on Embedded Systems, Embedded C and ATmega16. Students are advised to come in teams of four, and will be provided with a kit.

“The workshop is entering its third year now, it’s been a rage since it began began. We ready the groundwork for these fests for almost a year, during our holidays,” says Sai Niranjan Reddy, a third year engineering student who organises the event.

The workshop (where students will be provided certificates) hosted by IIT Hyderabad and AB Lab Solutions will commence in the IIT Hyderabad campus on January 7.
