IRCTC’s IPO made a listing gain of 128%, one of the biggest in recent times

IRCTC made its stock market debut last Monday. Investors oversubscribed for its Initial Public Offering (IPO) by 112 times. In the last five years, only six more IPOs saw a higher oversubscription. In general, oversubscription is a sign of high investor interest. The IPO of IRCTC with an issue price of Rs 320 ended its opening day at Rs 728, a listing gain of 128%, one of the biggest in recent times.

Demand spike

In the graph, each circle is an IPO listed between FY15 and October 16, 2019 and it plots the number of times an IPO was oversubscribed against the total amount raised by it. The highest oversubscription was for Salasar Techno Engineering which was oversubscribed by over 270 times. IRCTC’s IPO was comparable to that of air conditioning manufacturer Amber and securities from CDSL.
