Shall I?

It has its place when it comes to questions, to make suggestions or offers, or to ask for advice:

I shall spend all day tomorrow studying, mother,” said Ayush to his mother who wondered why he sounded unusually formal.

We shall never forget this beautiful day,” said my friends, leaving me surprised at the sudden dramatic tone.

What made the two statements sound so formal/dramatic?

It’s the shall !

Let’s look into the uses of shall .

First, we use shall with I or we when we make a suggestion.

Eg: Shall I turn on the air-conditioner? It’s so hot!

We also use shall to make promises or confirmations.

Eg : You shall be the first to know.

I shall meet you at five.

Finally in the language of legal contracts, shall means ‘has a legal duty to’.

Eg: The seller shall provide accurate and clear information…( meaning that the seller has a duty to provide accurate and clear information
