In hot water

Causing trouble can land you in it.

Ever been in hot water? Hope not!

To be in hot water is an old expression. One story says the expression got its meaning from the custom of throwing boiling water down an enemy attacking a castle. The custom no longer exists but we still get in hot water — when we are in hot water, we are in for trouble! A person who breaks a law can be in hot water with the police.

Troubled waters

Raghu was in a bit of hot water with his parents when they found out that he had gone to the movies instead of going for his tuitions.

Renu’s temper has landed her in hot water again.

So, stay out of trouble and you will never be in hot water! Remember, hot water can burn you.
