Here or there?

Here’s the trick to using singular or plural verbs with this confusing duo.

Here is a bright red apple.

There is a temple on the hill.

The sentences above, that began with here and there , have used the singular verb ‘is’. But this is not always so. Look at these sentences:

Here are Leena, Simy and Madhav!

There are three good reasons to buy our products.

How did here and there go from singular to plural? This is because, here and there can never be subjects of a sentence. The subjects of such sentences come after the verb, so that’s where you should look when you are making a subject-verb match.

Here is the baby parakeet that just bumped his head on the window.

Here are the books you were searching for!

There is a technical snag which is causing all the trouble.

There are no flying schools for birds.

So, no more problems with here and there , please!
