Nature Club, SURAT
Formed by friends, this club was started in 1984. Their plan was simple — to save nature, and connect with people who could help them in their endeavours. Today the club has around 800 volunteers out of which 400 are students from schools and colleges. Their main projects include vulture conservation and deer breeding.
Sprouts Environment Trust, MUMBAI
Being an ardent lover of nature, Anand Pendharkar formed a club in 1995. He was 24 then. His Trust has a presence all over the world, and through the day they document what they see around them. The club also specialises in an internship programme to train young “biodiversity leaders”. Some of their other activities include beach and forest clean-ups, urban farming and creating butterfly gardens.
Nature Club, Valsaad, DEHRADUN
It was formed by Pritesh Patel in 2009. Today his student brigade helps him with conservation. They conduct awareness programmes and campaigns, organise trekking and adventure camps, and teach other kids wildlife rescue operations. Some of their areas of work are vulture conservation and study of sparrows and other small birds.
Nature Mates- Nature Club, KOLKATTA
In 1997, when everyone else in his class was busy preparing for their board exams, Arjan Basu Roy was preparing for his life ahead. Having always been passionate about animals and birds he decided to form a club to protect nature. His friends helped set up Nature Mates Nature Club. Their primary work is wildlife rescue and constructing butterfly gardens in schools and parks across the city. They also conduct conservation campaigns through the year. Many schools have taken up the responsibility to propagate the need to nurture nature through this club.
Nizhal, CHENNAI
In September 2005, a few green activists like Shobha Menon began Nizhal, as a they felt that this basic civic issue was not being looked into. No one cared about dying trees or the right trees that needed to be planted in a particular area to regenerate local biodiversity. The idea is to bring about awareness and empower people about the role of trees in our lives and the need to plant, propagate and care for trees before and after planting. Their “Save the Tree” campaign to take care of mature trees and Community Park awareness to maintain community spaces along with the government is popular.
