Be short, be SUCCINCT

It is easy to be long winded. But the trick lies in being brief and concise.

“That was a pretty long-winded summary, Laila. You could have been more succinct,” said Laila’s teacher.

That set Laila thinking. A long-winded explanation is one that uses many words when just a few words would do. So, succinct should mean crisp, concise and to the point.

The teacher meant that her summary should have been succinct, that is to say, shorter and clearer .

“Quite a challenge,” thought Laila, biting her nails.

So, the word succinct refers to a style of communication that is concise and when you are succinct, you give a clear gist of something.

A succinct summary would thus give only the most significant information while a succinct description would be marked by description that is crisp and without wasted words.

Laila is now on pins and needles . A succinct summary is what she has to work on!
