Vodafone invests Rs. 300 crore in Karnataka

Private telecom operator Vodafone said that it has invested around Rs. 300 crore in Karnataka for ramping up the network and distribution in the circle over the last twelve months.

During the period between April 2014 to March 2015, Vodafone has activated more than 400 new sites, 67 retail touch points and taken M-Pesa, its mobile money transfer service to migrant pockets.

With the new site activation and retail expansion, the company covers 13,850 towns and villages in the State. Further, the company said, it has laid over 6,800 kms of optic fibre across Karnataka to serve the requirements of the enterprise customers also.

“We have made significant investment in the Karnataka circle to provide a better customer experience for our users especially in the interior regions. We have also expanded our retail and distribution network to get closer to the customer across urban and rural geographies,” said Atanu Batabyal, Business head-Karnataka, Vodafone India.

According to the company, with the expansions made last year, it has over 9,250 2G sites which covers over 76 per cent of the region's population. The Telcom operator also said it offers 3G roaming experience across additional 161 towns and villages in Karnataka.

Vodafone also said, in the Karnataka circle it is taking various measures to increase awareness and adoption of data services. In the Circle the Company's data service revenues has increased at a growth rate of 68 per cent annually and it now contributes to 17 per cent of total revenues of the Circle.

As on May the company had a subscriber base of 67 lakhs in the circle and has 869 retail touch points in Karnataka, including 60 Vodafone stores, 176 Vodafone mini-stores and over 633 DDVMS and ADVMS (rural mini-stores).

“Over the past 12 months, Vodafone has added 17 Vodafone Stores and 50 Vodafone mini-stores in the region. We have also enabled financial inclusion by making deep in-roads into Karnataka, reaching out to the migrant pockets and highlighting the safety, speed and simplicity of transferring money through Vodafone M-Pesa,” he added.
