Uber offers traffic data tool to government

Ride hailing service provider Uber on Monday said it is working with various State government agencies to offer its ‘Movement’ tool that can provide traffic-related insights. “The issue of [traffic] congestion is becoming [an] alarming issue across most cities in India... we have been able to gather large amounts of traffic data for several key metros in India,” said Ann Lavin, senior director (public policy and government relations) Asia Pacific of the firm. Data from the tool can be used by planners and policy makers to analyse transportation patterns, and plan future infrastructure projects accordingly.

She added that Uber Movement can help driver data-driven policy making and provide the much needed impetus to urban planners and civic authorities.

The U.S.-based cab aggregator had, in April, introduced ‘Movement’, a free tool that uses “anonymised data” from trips taken through its platform. This data can help planners and policy makers to analyse transportation patterns, and plan future infrastructure projects accordingly.
