Tyco bets big on Indian retailers

February 17, 2012 11:22 pm | Updated 11:22 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Tyco International, the $8.6 billion electronic security solutions provider, is looking at retail industry in a big way in India, according to Ramesh Jayaraman, Vice-President (Retail), Tyco Security for Asia Pacific, excluding Greater China.

In an interaction with this correspondent, Mr. Jayaraman said retail industry was one of the key verticals within Tyco and one of the first vertically focussed business units set up globally. The company was continuing to invest in R&D and development of leading solutions for the retail segment, he added. He said the company would be launching some new store performance solutions later this year. The solution would make retailers more effective in store operations. With big stores, large spaces and enormous merchandise, theft and other pilferages were also increasing. Retailers were expected to leverage technology to prevent shop-lifting and pilferages.

He said “the company has pan-India presence with seven offices. It will cover around 350 cities and towns in India with its ADT (American District Telegraph) monitoring business. We have invested hugely in India and have built the Centre of Excellence in Bangalore with about 100 engineers. The company is making significant strides in customising its global technology platforms to suit Indian conditions and equipment,” he added.

For example, in retail industry, he said “we have developed tags for saris, salwar kameez and jewellery. We intend to add more workforce in India to explore the potential for manufacturing and inorganic growth in the years ahead.” Tyco Security Solutions offered a full spectrum of retail security solutions such as electronic article surveillance (EAS), video surveillance, remote viewing, video analytics, intrusion and fire monitoring.

“Being part of a global organisation, our focus continues in similar lines to our global strategy,” he added. The company saw great potential in India's growing sectors such as aviation, transportation, power and oil and gas. In India, the company participated in major infrastructure projects. It recently completed the Delhi International Airport T-3 security installation and integration. At present, Tyco had two units in India — one each in Kochi and Bangalore.
