Tyre major MRF Ltd. has termed the ongoing strike by a large section of workers at its Tiruvottiyur plant here illegal.
MRF, however, said that the industrial action would not have any financial impact on the company.
In a regulatory filing, MRF said that the employees were on strike since February 8.
While the management did not give any reason for the strike, the union representatives said the industrial action was to protest against the unilateral installation of surveillance cameras within the factory premises.
MRF claimed that the CCTVs were installed for safety and security purposes. Installation of CCTVs was a requirement under the prevailing laws in Tamil Nadu, the company said.
“The operations of the factory are being partly continued with the help of workmen who are not part of the strike. The company is taking necessary steps to restore normalcy at the earliest,” the management said.
“We are not against installation of CCTVs. But don’t snoop on us as they encroach into our privacy,” said Union treasurer A. Gopinath.
“The company installed CCTVs unilaterally in over 100 places,” said MRF Union, general secretary, C.R. Prabhakaran.
MRF alleged that the union had not served any strike notice.
