K. C. Chakrabarty, Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has resigned on Thursday, three months ahead of the completion of his term.

An RBI spokesperson said: “Dr. Chakrabarty has requested for slightly earlier departure than scheduled term end (April 25, 2014 as against June 30, 2014) for personal reasons.”

Dr. Chakrabarty, a seasoned banker with over three decades of experience in commercial banking and known for being outspoken, joined the RBI as Deputy Governor on June 15, 2009. His original appointment was for a three-year tenure and, in 2012, he got an extension of two years.
