All-India Recycled Fibre & Yarn Manufacturers Association has requested the Centre to keep PET bottles outside the purview of single use plastic packaging material.
Association president B.P. Sultania has written in this regard to the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change in the wake of the Centre proposing a ban on single use plastic bottles. According to him, the association represents leading polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recyclers who convert post-consumption PET bottles into recycled polyester staple fibre (RPSF). There are 34 units with a total installed capacity of 7.05 lakh tonnes per annum of RPSF. It reported a total production value of ₹5,000 crore and provided direct employment to 25,000 people. Mr. Sultania said PET bottles could be recycled.
The recycled polyester staple fibre (RPSF) industry was engaged in and committed to improving and sustaining clean environment. It was also committed to further increasing the collection of waste PET bottles.
“Recycled PSF is 15%-20% cheaper than virgin PSF and therefore, provides cost-effective clothing to middle and lower middle class,” Mr. Sultania said.
