Toshiba JSW Turbine and Generator has bagged an order from NTPC for the supply of three 800 MW (3 x 800 MW) super-critical steam turbine and generator island packages for the Kudgi Super Thermal Power Project, Stage-I, in Kudgi, Karnataka. The contract value is around Rs. 2,300 crore.
Toshiba JSW has recently inaugurated its main plant facility to manufacture mid-and large-sized turbines and generators in Manali, Chennai.
The NTPC contract is the first project for which Toshiba JSW will manufacture the complete steam turbine and generator equipment at the Chennai plant. This will be done with the support of Toshiba Keihin Product Operations in Kawasaki, Japan, which will also supply some components of the turbine and generator. The delivery of the equipment is expected to start in 2013.
Supercritical steam turbines and generators achieve more environmental friendly power generation by higher generating efficiency. Toshiba Group's extensive experience in its manufacture and delivery includes delivery of 65 units in Japan and 18 units overseas. In India, in addition to other thermal power plant projects, Toshiba has already supplied five 830 MW super-critical steam turbines and generators for the Mundra ultra mega thermal power plant owned by Coastal Gujarat Power, a fully-owned subsidiary of Tata Power Company. Toshiba will supply two 660 MW super-critical steam turbines and generators for the Salaya-II thermal power plant operated by Essar Power Gujarat.
The company said in a release that it would mainly manufacture steam turbines and generators from 500 MW to 1,000 MW in scale, for supplying to the Indian and export markets. In addition to India,
Toshiba was promoting efforts to reinforce its presence in markets around the world, including Southeast Asia and the Middle East, where demand for thermal power systems is strong, the release added.
